In a tragic incident, a three-storey building collapsed in Navi Mumbai’s Shahbaz village early on Saturday morning, leaving at least two persons feared trapped under the rubble. The collapse occurred around 5 am, as confirmed by Kailas Shinde, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation commissioner. Emergency response teams, including the police, fire brigade, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), are actively engaged in the rescue operation at the site.
Shinde reported that the building, a ground-plus-three structure with 13 flats, is located in the Belapur ward. Two individuals have been rescued from the debris and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital, where their conditions are stable. “It is a 10-year-old building. An investigation is underway, and action will be taken against the building owner,” Shinde added.
This collapse follows a similar incident a week earlier in south Mumbai, where an 80-year-old woman was killed and four others injured when a portion of a balcony of a four-storey residential building on Sleater Road near Grant Road railway station came crashing down.
In another recent incident in Gujarat’s Devbhumi Dwarka district, an elderly woman and her two granddaughters lost their lives when a three-storey building in Jam Khambhalia town collapsed amid heavy rainfall. The victims were identified as Kesharben Kanjaria (65), Pritiben Kanjaria (15), and Payalben Kanjaria (18). The collapse, which occurred on Tuesday evening, prompted a nearly six-hour rescue operation involving the NDRF, police, and fire department, leading to the rescue of five individuals from the debris.
These incidents highlight the urgent need for stricter building safety regulations and timely maintenance checks to prevent such tragedies in the future.
