PM Modi Likely to Visit Ukraine Next Month, First Visit Since War Began

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Kyiv around Ukrainian National Day on August 24, marking his first trip to Ukraine since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022. This visit, if confirmed, will be a significant diplomatic gesture amid ongoing global efforts to mediate peace in the region.

According to diplomatic sources cited by PTI, the visit would involve meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Preparations for the trip are said to be extensive, involving complex logistics and arrangements. As of now, there has been no official confirmation from either the Indian or Ukrainian governments regarding the visit.

Recent Diplomatic Interactions

Prime Minister Modi and President Zelensky last met on June 14, 2024, during the G7 Summit in Italy’s Apulia. Their discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations and exploring avenues for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Modi reiterated India’s commitment to supporting a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.

Previously, Modi and Zelensky had also met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Japan in 2023. These interactions underscore the importance of India’s engagement in the international dialogue surrounding the Ukraine conflict.

Context of Modi’s Upcoming Visit

The anticipated visit to Ukraine will follow Modi’s recent trip to Russia, which took place from July 8 to 10, 2024. During his visit, Modi held an informal meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, including a dinner at Putin’s dacha in Novo-Ogaryovo, a rare honor reserved for a select few visiting leaders. Modi subsequently expressed his gratitude to Putin via a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The potential visit to Ukraine highlights India’s continued diplomatic efforts to engage with key global players and contribute to international peace initiatives. It also reflects the evolving geopolitical landscape as global leaders navigate the complexities of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
