Holistic Experiential Learning is a must for Real-World Readiness

Mr. Panicker, thank you for joining us. In today’s world, we see a clear divide in access to quality education. What are your thoughts on this disparity and its impact on society?

Absolutely, the disparity in quality education is a critical issue. It creates a cycle where those from disadvantaged backgrounds are limited in their opportunities, hindering both individual potential and societal progress. Quality education is the foundation for a thriving society.

You emphasize the link between education and employment. Can you elaborate on how quality education directly impacts career prospects?

It’s undeniable. Quality education equips individuals with the necessary skills, knowledge, and critical thinking abilities to secure well-paying jobs and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Conversely, a lack of access often traps individuals in a cycle of limited opportunities and poverty.

How can we break this cycle and ensure all children have access to quality education?

It requires a concerted effort. We need to invest in quality early childhood education, provide tangible support and motivation for students, and focus on holistic development that encompasses cognitive, emotional, and social growth.

You’re a strong advocate for STEAM Experiential Education. Why is STEAM Experiential Learning so crucial in addressing the educational gap?

I do not only advocate for STEAM Experiential Education, but I advocate for the right kind of STEAM Experiential Education which empowers students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a technology-driven world. By integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, we foster creativity, innovation, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. These are essential for the 21st-century workforce. Certificates and marks alone will not guarantee anyone of being relevant in the future job market. STEAM promotes an inter-disciplinary approach of learning and problem solving which helps develop learners to become agile and adaptable.

International STEAM Research (ISR) partners with schools to implement STEAM education. What specific services does ISR provide to these schools?

We offer a comprehensive approach. We help schools enhance their curriculum with activity based, project based and research and enquiry based learning, develop teacher capacity through upskilling, leverage cutting-edge technology, foster creativity and innovation, and bridge the gap between education and industry.

How does ISR help schools bridge the gap between education and industry?

We prepare students with a holistic approach, to be future-ready by equipping them with the 21st Century essential skills required by the job market of the future. We focus on practical application and real-world relevance.

You mentioned a holistic approach to STEAM Experiential Education. What do you mean by that?

It’s about developing well-rounded individuals. Today, many have the misconception that just Robotics or AI is holistic and experiential learning. Therefore, schools must refrain themselves from setting up just a Robotics lab, instead aim to set up an Experiential Learning lab that will help students do design-thinking without the fear of failure. If such a lab has to be truly Experiential then it has to be relevant to the subjects taught in the classroom based on the curriculum the school follows. If not, students will not be able to identify the connection between the various subjects and the activities being done in the lab. Only when they are helped to find this connection can they be empowered to solve real world problems in a sustainable manner. Therefore, a holistic STEAM lab must foster emotional intelligence, meta-cognitive skills, social skills and encourage curiosity and discovery.

You recently highlighted the MuseVention showcased by many Schools in India. How does this event exemplify the impact of ISR’s work?

MuseVention is a fantastic showcase of student creativity and innovation. The students, who have been participating in ISR STEAM Experiential Learning classes for a minimum of 2 years, have demonstrated their innovation skills as well as mastery of futuristic technologies like drones, robotics, AI, coding, IoT, AR/VR, and 3D printing. This event proves that providing students with hands-on experience and practical knowledge prepares them for the future job market.

What role do events like ISR’s MuseVention play in the broader educational landscape?

ISR’s events like MuseVention, inspire and motivate students, teachers, and the community. They demonstrate the power of STEAM education and the importance of investing in innovative learning experiences. They also serve as a benchmark for other institutions, showing what is possible when schools and organizations collaborate to provide quality education.

Finally, Mr. Panicker, as the Founder and CEO of International STEAM Research (ISR), what is your vision for the future of STEAM experiential education?

My vision is a future where all children have access to sustainable, affordable and quality STEAM experiential education in its true sense and not just stop at simple robotics or coding, regardless of their background. I believe that by prioritizing quality STEAM experiential education, fostering innovation, and leveraging technology, we can empower the next generation to shape a better world in a sustainable manner. Partnerships like those between ISR and schools are crucial in achieving this vision.
