‘Rahul Dravid Screamed and Cried’: Ravichandran Ashwin Reflects on India’s T20 World Cup Triumph

India’s victory in the T20 World Cup 2024, held in the USA and West Indies, marked a historic moment for the nation, as they claimed their first ICC title in years. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma and the guidance of head coach Rahul Dravid, the Men in Blue achieved a remarkable win, snatching victory from the brink of defeat.

In a heartfelt video on his YouTube channel, Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin shared a special memory from the World Cup celebration, focusing on the emotional moment when Rahul Dravid lifted the trophy. Ashwin recounted seeing Dravid, who had not won an ICC title during his playing days, overwhelmed with emotion. “My moment was when Virat Kohli called Rahul Dravid and gave the cup. I saw him hug the cup and cry,” Ashwin said. “Rahul Dravid screamed and cried. I saw him enjoy it. I felt that a lot.”

Ashwin also touched upon Dravid’s apprehensions about extending his coaching tenure for the T20 World Cup, especially given the team’s disappointing performance in the 2007 ODI World Cup, which had a lasting impact on Dravid’s career. “In 2007, the 50-over World Cup. India gets knocked out. Rahul Dravid was the captain then. He does not captain the one-day side after that,” Ashwin recalled.

Despite the pressures and criticisms faced during his tenure, Ashwin praised Dravid’s dedication and contributions as a coach. He highlighted Dravid’s role in bringing balance and a new approach to the team. “I know what he has been doing with this team for the past two to three years. I know how balanced he has been. I know how hard he has worked to change this approach,” Ashwin said.

He also mentioned Dravid’s commitment to the team, even outside of match days. “Even when he is just sitting at home, he has been planning how to do this and that,” Ashwin added, reflecting the deep respect and admiration he has for Dravid’s efforts and leadership.
